Google Business Profile Optimization: A Full Checklist

Google Business Profile Optimization: A Full Checklist

Google Business Profile optimization used to mean filling in a listing that customers read. Your profile is now a database that an AI reads on their behalf.

That shift happened on March 12, 2026, when Google launched Ask Maps, a Gemini layer inside Google Maps that answers questions like “quiet cafe near Thonglor with power sockets and space for four” with a recommendation instead of a list. On August 6, 2026, Google extended it in English to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico and more than 150 countries and territories, Thailand included.

So Google Business Profile optimization now has two jobs: rank in the map pack, and give the model enough structured material to name you rather than the business next door.

This checklist covers every field worth completing, the ones that do nothing for rankings, the review rules Google rewrote in April 2026, and the mistakes that keep showing up in Bangkok profiles.

Start with what actually changed, because half the advice still circulating was written for a different product.

What Changed in Google Business Profile Optimization

Three changes in the last twelve months matter more than every tip published before them.

Ask Maps is the first. Google says the feature draws on information about more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors to answer conversational questions inside Maps. That means your categories, services, attributes, hours, photos and the actual wording of your reviews are now retrieval material for a language model, not just fields on a page. A profile that lists “restaurant” and nothing else cannot be matched to “somewhere with outdoor seating that takes a group of eight after 10pm.” A profile with services, attributes and reviews that mention those details can.

The second change is a deletion. Google disabled the Business Profile Q&A API on November 3, 2025 and began removing the public Q&A section from profiles on December 3, 2025. New profiles ship without it. If your local SEO plan included seeding your own keyword-rich questions, that tactic no longer exists. Google now generates those answers itself from your profile, your reviews and your website.

The third is enforcement. In its 2025 Maps trust and safety report, published April 16, 2026, Google said it blocked or removed more than 292 million policy-violating reviews, blocked 79 million inaccurate or unverified edits, restricted more than 782,000 accounts, and removed over 13 million fake Business Profiles. Google also began using Gemini to catch manipulated profile edits before they go live.

Read together, those three changes point the same direction. Google is putting more weight on profile data it can verify, and less on anything a marketer can type into a box. The same shift is happening across Google’s other surfaces, which we covered in our guide to Google Preferred Sources for Thai businesses.

The Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist

Timeline of Google Business Profile changes from November 2025 to August 2026

Google Business Profile optimization comes down to two passes: the fields that decide whether you are eligible to appear, then the fields that decide whether you get picked.

Pass one: eligibility fields

Get these wrong and nothing else you do matters.

  • Business name. Exactly the name on your signage and registration. No city, no service keyword, no tagline. Name stuffing is the fastest route to a suspension, and it is still the most common violation we find in Bangkok audits.
  • Primary category. Pick the single closest match, then check what your top three map pack competitors use. The primary category carries more weight than any other single field.
  • Secondary categories. Add only categories you genuinely serve. Every extra category dilutes relevance for the primary one.
  • Address or service area. Physical address for premises customers visit. Service area for businesses that travel. Never both for the same location.
  • Map pin placement. Drag the pin to the actual entrance. In Bangkok this matters more than anywhere, because a pin dropped on the wrong side of a soi sends people to a wall.
  • Hours, including special hours. Set public holiday hours in advance. Google filters on “open now,” so a wrong Songkran entry removes you from results on your busiest week.
  • Phone number. A local number, matching your website and your citations exactly.
  • Website URL. Point it at the location page, not the homepage, if you have more than one location. Tag it with UTM parameters so the traffic is identifiable in GA4.

Pass two: selection fields

These are what a customer, or a model, uses to choose between two eligible businesses.

  • Services and products, each with its own description. This is where the vocabulary of your actual offer lives.
  • Attributes. Answer every yes or no question Google offers. Wheelchair access, parking, women-led, appointment required. These are structured facts Ask Maps can filter on.
  • Business description, 750 characters, written for a human. Say what you do, for whom, where.
  • Photos. Exterior from the street, entrance, interior, team, product or work in progress. Refresh monthly rather than uploading 60 images once.
  • Booking or ordering link, if your category supports it.
  • Opening date, which feeds the “years in business” signal.

One honest caveat: not every field is a ranking lever. The 2026 Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey, covered by Search Engine Journal, found that keywords stuffed into the business description scored low, and so did volume of Q&A activity. Fill the fields anyway, because they now feed AI answers and human decisions, but do not expect the description alone to change your ranking.

Finish both passes before you spend a baht on citations or local links. Those amplify a profile that is already correct, and they amplify nothing when it is not. It is also the order we work in on every Google Business Profile and map pack campaign we run.

Inspira Insight

At Inspira Digital Agency, we audit the Google Business Profile before any local campaign in Bangkok, and the same three failures repeat. A map pin dropped on the wrong side of the soi. Opening hours never updated after Songkran. A review base written entirely in English for a business whose customers search in Thai. Here is what that taught us: the pin costs direction requests, the hours cost you the “open now” filter, and the English-only reviews cost you relevance in half the market.

Reviews, Photos, and Posts: The Half That Never Ends

Setup is a one-day job. The rest of Google Business Profile optimization is reviews, photos and posts, and that half decides whether the profile keeps working.

Reviews carry more weight than they did three years ago. The 2026 Whitespark survey put review signals at 20% of local pack influence, up from 16% in 2023. What matters is not only the star average but the language inside the reviews, because Gemini reads that text when it decides which business fits a specific request.

Then Google changed the rules on how you ask. On April 17, 2026, Google added two clauses to the Maps user-generated content policy under rating manipulation. Merchants may not instruct staff to collect a set number of reviews, and may not ask customers to mention specific content such as an employee name. That kills two tactics agencies in Thailand still sell: review quotas for front-desk staff, and scripts asking customers to name the person who served them. Review gating, where you filter unhappy customers away from Google, was already prohibited. Ask everyone, ask soon after the service, and ask without a script.

Reply to every review, including the good ones, within a few days. Replies are public, indexed, and they are one of the few places you can add context in your own words now that Q&A is gone.

Photos need a cadence rather than a launch. Add a handful each month, shot on a phone, showing the current state of the business. Posts are the closest replacement for Q&A: publish the questions customers actually ask, answer them in the post, and keep one live at all times.

The pattern is consistency, not volume. A profile updated twice a month beats one that got 40 photos in a single afternoon two years ago.

What Bangkok Businesses Get Wrong on Google Maps

Google Business Profile optimization in Bangkok has failure modes you will not find in a guide written for the US. Thailand runs roughly 97% of its searches through Google, so the map pack here is close to the whole local market.

Comparison of a single-language and bilingual Google Business Profile setup in Bangkok

With 67.8 million internet users and 96.6 million mobile connections, most of those searches happen on a phone, near the point of decision. The full picture sits in our roundup of Thailand digital marketing and SEO statistics. The failures we see are specific to this market, not generic.

Language is the biggest one. Most Bangkok profiles are optimised in one language and left to translate themselves into the other. Google Business Profile supports separate title and description content by language, and reviews written in Thai give you relevance for Thai queries that no English review can. If your customers include Thai nationals and expats, you need both, which is the case we make in our local SEO guide for Bangkok.

Addresses come second. Thai addresses with soi numbers, building names and floor levels get entered inconsistently across Google, your website, and Thai directories. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

Third, Ask Maps currently answers in English in Thailand. Google’s August 2026 expansion covered more than 150 countries and territories in English, with other languages still to come. A Thai-language business with strong Thai reviews and thin English signals may rank fine in the map pack and still be invisible in the conversational layer sitting above it. Give Ask Maps something to read in English too.

Fourth, many Thai businesses route enquiries through LINE. Google will not give you a LINE button, so put the LINE link on the landing page your profile points to, and measure the click.

Bangkok rewards the businesses that treat Thai and English as two separate audiences with two sets of signals, because that is exactly how the searches arrive.

How to Measure Google Business Profile Performance

Measure four things and ignore the rest.

Google’s performance report inside the profile gives you calls, direction requests, website clicks, bookings, and the split between searches that found you by name and searches that found you by category. That last split is the honest measure of local visibility. If discovery searches are flat while branded searches rise, your other marketing is working and your profile is not.

Tag the website link with UTM parameters so GA4 separates profile traffic from general organic. Track calls with a call tracking number only if you can keep the main number identical everywhere else, because inconsistent numbers cost you more than the tracking gains.

Here is the limit worth stating before a client asks. Google does not report whether Ask Maps or an AI Overview recommended you. There is no impression count, no citation report, and no dashboard. You measure it by proxy: direction requests, discovery searches, and branded search volume over a 90 day window. The same proxy logic applies to every AI surface, which we set out in our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT in Thailand. Anyone selling you an Ask Maps ranking report is estimating.

Set the measurement window before you start the work, because a profile rebuild takes six to twelve weeks to settle and monthly comparisons before then tell you nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Google Business Profile optimization take to show results?

Most profiles show movement in discovery searches and direction requests within four to eight weeks of a proper rebuild. Category changes and hours corrections can register in days. Review volume and photo cadence compound over three to six months. Competitive Bangkok categories such as dental clinics or condo agencies take longer, because the businesses above you are already doing the same work.

Does adding keywords to my business name improve rankings?

It can help briefly, and it risks suspension. Google requires the name field to match your real-world business name, with no city, service keyword or tagline attached. Competitors can report the violation, and reinstatement takes weeks during which you lose the listing entirely. Put your keywords in categories, services and the description instead, where they belong.

Can I still add questions and answers to my Google Business Profile?

No. Google disabled the Q&A API on November 3, 2025 and started removing the public Q&A section on December 3, 2025. New profiles are created without it. Move that content to an FAQ page on your own website and to Google Posts, both of which Google’s AI systems can read when they generate answers about your business.

Should my Google Business Profile be in Thai or English?

Both, if you sell to both audiences. Thai consumers search in Thai and read Thai reviews. Expats, tourists and international B2B buyers search in English, and Ask Maps currently answers in English in Thailand. Publish descriptions and posts in both, and ask customers to review in the language they actually speak.

How many photos and reviews does a Google Business Profile need?

There is no threshold that unlocks rankings. A steady cadence beats a bulk upload: a few photos each month, and a consistent flow of new reviews rather than 40 in one week, which looks like manipulation to systems that removed 292 million policy-violating reviews in 2025. Aim for a rate your business can sustain indefinitely.

Conclusion

Google Business Profile optimization is no longer a setup task you finish. It is a data feed you maintain, and it now supplies both the map pack and the AI layer that increasingly answers local questions before anyone reaches a website.

You now know which fields decide eligibility, which decide selection, which ones do less than the industry claims, and which review tactics became policy violations in April 2026. You also know Google will not report on your AI visibility, so you measure by proxy or you do not measure at all.

The checklist takes an afternoon. The cadence is the actual work.
